Ngāi Tahu kaumatua Laurie Loper established the James Stewart Loper Bequest to accelerate progress on equity and excellence in education through the use of best evidence about teaching, learning and professional learning.

The James Stewart Loper Bequest enabled Shirley Primary School to access the expertise of Associate Professor Bobbie Hunter, senior mentor, Trevor Bills, and others from the Massey University team to implement the pedagogy featured in BES Exemplar 1. This culturally responsive pedagogy accelerates progress in mathematics education and supports student collaboration and wellbeing.

The bequest has been administered through a partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Massey University, Shirley Primary School, the Iterative Best Evidence Synthesis (BES) Programme।Hei Kete Raukura and the Christchurch Regional Office of the Ministry of Education.  The Minister of Education joined Hangaia Te Urupounamu Pāngarau Mō Tātou partners to celebrate the bequest on the 21st June 2016.

The senior leadership team began preparing for this opportunity in mid-2015 and staff returned from holidays early to start their professional learning on 28th January 2016. Shirley Primary School generously allowed filming very early in the change process in May 2016.

This video provides an introduction to the nature of this best evidence in action from the perspective of the kaumatua, the school leadership, teachers, students, board of trustees and whānau. The video allows us to hear from Ngāi Tahu learners how big the change has been from their perspective.
