Tertiary Population Data

Interactive graphs showing demographic breakdowns of domestic tertiary education participation rates and student numbers.

Create your own graphs

The two graphs below provide an overview of participation in provider-based tertiary education by selected demographic factors. Use the first filter to select the view you are interested in (qualification level, subsector or total). The second filter gives a choice of demographic factors between ethnicity, gender or total. The third filter allows selection of a specific age group (under 18, 18-19, 20-24, 25-39, 40 years and over) or total.

The total participation rate in the first graph is the percentage of the population aged 15 years and over who were enrolled at any time during the year.

The student numbers in the second graph count students for each category that applies. This means any students with more than one ethnicity, or who studied at more than one qualification level, will be counted more than once.

Further demographic focused information will be added here over time. Statistical tables with more detailed data on tertiary education participation are available here.

Notes

The data used on this page relates to domestic students only.

Data relates to students enrolled at any time during the year with a tertiary education provider in formal qualifications of greater than 0.03 EFTS (more than one week's full-time duration). Data excludes all non-formal learning and on-job industry training.

Students are counted in each ethnic group they identify with.

Students are counted for each qualification level they enrol in.

Age is calculated as at 31 December.

Totals also include those students with unknown values.

The participation rate is the number of domestic students enrolled in tertiary education at any time during the year divided by the number of people in the population. The total participation rate is the total number of students enrolled in tertiary education divided by the total population aged 15 and over.

The population numbers are taken from the latest estimated resident population numbers produced by Statistics New Zealand. These estimates are revised after every census, which can result in some changes to previously published data.
