Curriculum Insights and Progress Study Publications
Publication Details
The Curriculum Insights and Progress study was established in 2023 to monitor Year 3, 6 and 8 student achievement and progress in the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum and develop insights that can be used to enable and support system improvement. It is run by the University of Otago and New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
Curriculum Insights builds on two previous assessment studies: the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA, 2011-2022), and the National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP, 1995-2010).
The study carries out two assessment programmes:
- Foundation assessments monitor progress in reading, writing, and mathematics. In 2023, reading and mathematics were assessed; in 2024, writing and mathematics. From 2025, reading, writing and mathematics will be assessed every year.
- Learning area assessments provide insights and exemplars and explore the contextual factors that influence student progress in two curriculum areas each year. The study assesses all eight learning areas over a four-year cycle.
