TIMSS 2010/11 Data Services

TIMSS 2010/11 is the fifth in a cycle of studies designed to measure trends in science and mathematics achievement at the middle primary and lower secondary levels. For this cycle of TIMSS, New Zealand tested Year 9 students in November 2010 and Year 5 students in October 2011. The students were tested towards the end of their school year; in the other Southern Hemisphere countries, for both year levels this was around November 2010 and in Northern Hemisphere countries around May 2011.

TIMSS Key Facts

Key Facts: TIMSS 2010/11

Who: 5,572 Year 5 students from 180 schools, their parents, their teachers, and principals participated in TIMSS 2010/11 in New Zealand.  5,336 &Year 9 students from 158 schools, their teachers, and principals also participated.

What: Assessment in mathematics and science, with background information also collected.

How: Conducted under the auspices of the IEA; managed internationally by Boston College; and managed within New Zealand by the Ministry of Education .

Where: More than 60 countries from around the world participated in TIMSS 2010/11, plus 14 benchmarking participants.

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is conducted on a four-year cycle. The first study was administered in participating countries in 1994/95.

This fifth TIMSS assessment coincided with the third assessment of Year 5 students in reading in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). Many of the activities at the Year 5 level for PIRLS and TIMSS were therefore combined internationally. (See PIRLS 2010/11).

TIMSS 2010/11 Questionnaires

As well as the test itself, students were given a questionnaire containing questions about themselves, their opinions about learning mathematics and science, their computer use, and learning at home. Principals and teachers were also given questionnaires in order to gain further information about the context in which the mathematics and science teaching and learning take place. Below are links to each of these questionnaires for each of Year 5 and Year 9.
