TIMSS 2027 Data Services
Description
TIMSS is a digital assessment of mathematics and science. It also gathers background information from principals, teachers, students, and parents.
TIMSS has a strong curriculum focus and provides opportunities for comparison of curriculum design, implementation, and outcomes around the world.
Being a digital assessment, TIMSS can take advantage of innovative and engaging techniques for assessment, including problem-solving and inquiry tasks.
Key facts
When: March 2026 will be the field trial. September to November 2027 will be the main study implementation in New Zealand.
Who: Year 5 and Year 9 students along with their mathematics and science teachers and their principals will take part in the study. Parents/caregivers of Year 5 students will also be asked to participate.
What: Assessment in mathematics and science, with background information also collected.
How: Conducted under the auspices of the IEA; managed internationally by Boston College; and managed within New Zealand by the Ministry of Education.
Where: Around 60 countries will participate in TIMSS 2027.
When the outcomes will be released: The international results will be released in December 2028.
