This is the home page for the Student Loan Scheme Annual Report publication series. The Student Loan Scheme Annual Report has been tabled in Parliament each year since 2001 and provides public accountability information to government and New Zealanders to show that the scheme is achieving its primary objective – ensuring that tertiary education is financially attainable to all New Zealanders.
Each report provides information on the loan scheme and its performance, as well as statistics on those borrowing under the scheme and their repayment behaviour. In addition, each report contains financial schedules for the most recent fiscal year.

Student Loan Scheme Annual Report 2011
The Annual Report for 2011 provides information on the scheme and those who borrowed from it in 2010, as well as the financial schedules for the fiscal year to 30 June 2011.
This year's report is structured so that the information aligns with the outcomes framework developed by the agencies that manage and administer the scheme.Key findings in the report are:
- The nominal value of loan balances was $12.1 billion as at 30 June 2011.
- 212,000 students borrowed from the loan scheme in 2010 (74 percent of eligible students).
- As at 30 June 2011, 621,000 people had a student loan with Inland Revenue for collection.
- The median repayment time for those who left study in 2006 and remain in New Zealand was 5.2 years.

Student Loan Scheme Annual Report 2010
The Annual Report for 2010 provides information on the scheme and those who borrowed from it in 2009, as well as the financial schedules for the fiscal year to 30 June 2010.
This year’s report is structured so that the information aligns with the outcomes framework developed by the agencies that manage and administer the scheme. Key findings in the report are:
- The nominal value of loan balances was $11.145 billion as at 30 June 2010
- 199,000 students borrowed from the loan scheme in 2009 (71% of eligible students)
- As at 30 June 2010 587,500 people had a student loan with Inland Revenue for collection
- The median repayment time for those who left study in 2006 is forecast to be 6.5 years

The Annual Report for 2009 provides information on the scheme and those who borrowed from it in 2008, as well as the financial schedules for the fiscal year to 30 June 2009.
Key findings in the report are:
- The nominal value of loan balances was $10.259 billion as at 30 June 2009
- 179,000 students borrowed from the loan scheme in 2008 (69% of eligible students)
- As at 30 June 2009 562,000 people had a student loan with Inland Revenue for collection
- The median repayment time for those who left study in 2006 is forecast to be 7 years

The Annual Report for 2008 provides information on the scheme and those who borrowed from it in 2007, as well as the financial schedules for the fiscal year to 30 June 2008.
Key findings in the report are:
- The nominal value of loan balances was $9.573 billion as at 30 June 2008
- 174,000 students borrowed from the loan scheme in 2007 (66% of eligible students)
- As at 30 June 2008 530,000 people had a student loan with Inland Revenue for collection
- The median repayment time for those who left study in 2005 is forecast to be 7 years.

- 167,000 students borrowed from the loan scheme in 2006 (56% of eligible students)
- As at 30 June 2007 499,000 people had a student loan
- The median repayment time for those who left study in 2003 and remained in New Zealand is forecast to be 6 years.
