This best evidence in action exemplar provides a window into the transformative work of poet, Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh, working collaboratively with former principal, Liz Horgan, and staff and students at St Joseph’s School, Otahuhu.
In this video, the blend of cultural identity, having voice and speaking to an audience is shared.
“The teller is the tale. When what they know is the centre, when they are the expert in their own lives, articulating their space, their location, their place in the world and valuing it; that’s the beginning of confidence in their ability to tell a good story.”
Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh
”The Writing in Schools project creates a learning situation that is totally authentic because the children are writing for readership. We were able to use our parents as a resource and the writing that came out of that resonated with cultural identity.”
Anne Kulik. Visual Arts Lead Teacher, St Joseph’s School
