Key Facts: TIMSS 2018/19
When: October-December 2018 for Year 5 students, and 2019 for Year 9 students in New Zealand.
Who: Year 5 students and their parents/caregivers, along with their mathematics and science teachers, and principals will take part in the study in 2018. Year 9 students will participate in the main study in 2019, as well as their mathematics and science teachers and their principals.
What: Assessment in mathematics and science, with background information also collected.
How: Conducted under the auspices of the IEA; managed internationally by Boston College; and managed within New Zealand by the Ministry of Education .
Where: Over 60 countries and benchmarking entities (regional jurisdictions of countries such as states or provinces) will participate in TIMSS 2018/19.
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is conducted on a four-year cycle. The first study was administered in participating countries in 1994 and 1995.
This cycle of TIMSS assessments provides detailed information about mathematics and science in the New Zealand Curriculum, the curriculum implementation, instructional practices, and school resources over a 24-year period. TIMSS 2018/19 will be conducted in the following timeline:
- TIMSS 2018/19 initiation in February 2018.
- Field testing of Year 5 and Year 9 contextual questionnaires and assessment materials in March/April 2018.
- Main data collection for Year 5 in October and November 2018; main data collection for Year 9 in 2019.
