PISA 2025 Data Services
The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international education research study of 15-year-olds who are nearing the end of compulsory schooling. PISA 2025 is the nineth cycle of this OECD research programme which began in 2000. Ninety-one countries and economies took part in PISA 2025.
Students’ knowledge and skills in science, mathematics, and reading are assessed, which are foundational for success and informed citizenship in the modern world. Science was the focus domain and learning in the digital world was the innovative domain in PISA 2025.
PISA evaluates how well-prepared students are to meet real-life opportunities and challenges after they finish school and monitors progress towards raising achievement and reducing inequity.

When:
Field trial: 15 May to 26 June 2024.
Main survey: 12 June to 12 September 2025.
Who:
Round 5,000 students (aged between 15-years-3-months and 16-years-2-months at the time of assessment) schools took part in the PISA 2025 main survey. These students were randomly sampled from a representative sample of 133 New Zealand English-medium schools. Schools are selected by an international sampling consortium using proportional random sampling techniques.
What:
An international research study of a large representative sample of students in New Zealand schools. The study assesses students' achievement in three key areas: science, mathematics, reading. Learning in the digital world was the innovative domain in PISA 2025, which measures students’ capacity to engage in an iterative process of knowledge building and problem solving using computational tools. It measures two distinct skills: computational problem solving and self-regulated learning. A large amount of contextual background information is also collected from students and schools.
How:
Conducted under the auspices of the OECD; and managed within New Zealand by the Ministry of Education. The OECD’s mission is to shape policies that foster prosperity, equality, opportunity, and well-being for all.
Where:
Over 760,000 students from 91 countries and economies, including 38 OECD countries, participated in PISA 2025. Countries all over the world took part.
