Collaborating institutions
Technical notes
This section explores the collaborations between New Zealand universities and institutions, either located in this country or overseas.
A collaboration is defined as domestic if the articles/reviews produced have at least two authors, two or more distinct addresses and the organisations and all addresses are in the same country (New Zealand).
A collaboration is defined as international if the articles/reviews produced include at least one international co-author.
Two time periods were used (1996-2000 and 2016-2020) to identify any change in collaborations over time. The collaborating institutions are ranked in order of number of articles/reviews where collaboration took place.
Collaborating institutions were included if they produced at least 10 papers over each time period. This threshold allows for a selection of the largest collaborations between New Zealand universities and other institutions.
Regarding international collaborations, major world universities, research institutions and journals are concentrated in some areas of the world (namely North America and Europe), hence a distinct geographical bias is to be expected.
As some subject areas have a higher number of journals (such as Clinical Medicine and Chemistry) the placing of the institutions may be impacted by the subject areas in which they specialised.
The following analysis presents the top 10 domestic and international collaborating institutions for each New Zealand university over 1996-2000 and 2016-2020. Where the number of papers was below the above-mentioned thresholds, the number of institutions listed was less than 10. In case of ties (i.e., same number of papers produced), all institutions are displayed.
The list of the top 10 domestic and international collaborating institutions is also presented via world maps. In these maps the imaginary path between each New Zealand university and the top 10 collaborating institutions in the two time periods in use is represented with a line. A thicker line indicates a larger number of articles/reviews produced by the collaborations between linked institutions. The names of the collaborating institutions can be found in the table relative to the New Zealand university in question.

Footnotes
- Less than 10 international institutions are reported for the 1996-2000 period, as others did not meet the threshold of producing at least 10 articles/reviews in the given time period.
- Auckland University of Technology became a university after 1996-2000. The number of indexed publications in that time period was relatively small and are excluded from this analysis.
