Summary

The research findings will assist institutions with decision-making around policies and programmes that are likely to be effective for students. The research was undertaken by Massey University College of Education. For each of these aspects a search and synthesis of literature was undertaken and a series of propositions developed. The research is presented in three reports – a full report (top right), and two summary reports (below) for academic staff development and student support services. Each of these is profiled below.

Impact of Student Support Services and Academic Development Programmes on Student Outcomes in Undergraduate Tertiary Study

This project researched the characteristics of academic staff development programmes and student support services offered in tertiary institutions that make a difference for undergraduate tertiary students in their studies. For each of these aspects a search and synthesis of literature was undertaken and a series of propositions developed. Student outcomes comprised achievement, participation, progression, retention and completion. The full report provides complete description of each of the propositions developed for effective practice in academic staff development and student support services. It also provides a background to the research into student outcomes in tertiary study, an explanation of the research methodology and an annotated bibliography of the key research studies used to develop the propositions.

Academic staff development: A summary of the synthesis of research on the impact of academic staff development programmes on student outcomes in undergrad tertiary study

This report is a summary of the propositions developed for the characteristics of academic staff development that make a difference for students in undergraduate tertiary study. It also summarises how the research methodology deals with the relationship between academic staff development, quality teaching, and student outcomes.

Supporting students in tertiary study: A summary of the research on the impacts of student support services on student outcomes in undergrad tertiary study

This report is a summary of the propositions developed for the characteristics of institutional student support services that make a difference for students in undergraduate tertiary study. The propositions cover the social and academic integration of students into the tertiary institutional environment, and institutional adaptation to meet the needs of diverse students.
