Summary
This report updates an earlier report looking at trends in participation in tertiary education in New Zealand. This report now includes information up to 2002.
This report includes new information on Pasifika and Asian rates of participation, along with updated information on Māori participation.
There is also new information on rates of participation for students with disabilities.
The report includes a sub-section on international students, as well as a section on international comparisons using latest OECD statistics.
There are new sections on summer study, on students who enrolled with more than one provider, on patterns of enrolment across the year, and on students' highest school qualification.
As per last year's report, the report also analyses latest trends in participation by age, sex, sub-sector, level of study, field of study, extramural study, and prior activity.
Information is provided on students who studied at anytime during the year, as well as those who were enrolled at 31 July, the traditional enrolment count day.
Note that the count of students who studied during 2002 is provisional, and has been adjusted so that students enrolled at more than one provider are only counted once. July-based counts in this report are final and not adjusted for this. Hence 2002 total year counts will differ from final unadjusted counts that may be published elsewhere.
