Summary

Indicator Description

Percentage of Year 4 learners ‘at’ or ‘above’ the expected mathematics curriculum level in state and state integrated English medium schools only (as measured by NMSSA).

The New Zealand Curriculum has achievement objectives in mathematics across three strands: number and algebra, geometry and measurement, and statistics. Learners are expected to think mathematically to solve problems, model solutions, and make connections between the strands.

Why This Data is Important

A strong foundation in mathematics is particularly important, as it allows learners to better acquire new and advanced knowledge in mathematics. Learners with a strong foundation in mathematics will have more opportunities to progress their learning and more choices in their transition into further education, training and employment.

How We Are Going

Based on common items between the 2013 and 2018 NMSSA tests for mathematics, there was no significant change in the average score for Year 4 learners/ākonga,

Against the mathematics curriculum, learners are expected to have achieved at ‘Level 2’ by the end of Year 4. In 2018, 81% of Year 4 learners were ‘at’ or ‘above’ the expected curriculum level, no change since 2013.
