Publication Details

Author(s): Ministry of Education
Date Published: June 2023
Summary
From late March to May 2022, the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) undertook a targeted engagement on
the concept of a ‘Vocational Entrance’ Award (the VE Award), and on the senior secondary Vocational
Education and Training (VET) system more generally. We spoke with schooling, tertiary, and industry sector
representatives who had a range of experience and involvement in the VET system.
The purpose of this engagement was to discuss with these sector representatives what a VE Award could
look like, what components of learning and credentials it should include, and how it could best support clear
and valued pathways for ākonga from school into tertiary education and learning. Other issues currently
impacting VET provision, and system improvements that could be made over time, were also discussed.
This report summarises the main themes from the consultation that will shape the next steps of the VE
Award and will inform further work in the VET system over the medium-term.
