Summary
In July 1999 a new Stand-down and Suspension (SDS) Database was established to collate information on stand-downs and suspensions under the guidelines of the amended legislation.
Boards have now increased flexibility to impose conditions when a student is permitted to return to school, or to extend a suspension with conditions. The stand-down option is new and is different from the previous 'specified stand-down' option. Different board decision-making processes now apply, along with increased options for boards to consider when reaching decisions about suspending students. Given these changes, it is not appropriate to make comparisons with what happened to suspended students under the former proceedure.
The data presented in this report are to be regarded as baseline.
