Competent children: Influences of early childhood experiences - Pilot study report Publications

In January 1992, the Ministry of Education began funding the Competent Children longitudinal study, to look at the effects of early childhood contexts on children. The first-stage funding allowed the research team to undertake a pilot study for the main longitudinal project, and to conduct an action research study of a small number of children to examine the effects of intervening in their curriculum for learning at home and in early childhood settings.

Executive Summary
This pilot study has served four purposes:
- to pilot the instruments, field-work procedures, scoring, data entry, and analysis procedures;
- to subsequently modify instruments and procedures to ensure that the main study is more effective and is manageable for the resources available;
- to indicate important parameters for the main study sample; and
- to indicate some preliminary patterns in the data
The work was too preliminary to test the theoretical model with only 19 children. However, there is already a strong indication that complex early childhood histories and "packaging" (multiple use) of ECS will become an important focus of the main study.
