Competent Children, Competent Learners

This is the home page for the Competent Children, Competent Learners publication series.

The Competent Children, Competent Learners project is a longitudinal study undertaken by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) which focuses on a group of about 500 young people from the greater Wellington region. When the project began in 1993 its aim was to provide New Zealand policy makers and the early childhood education sector with a study which could show the concurrent, short-term, and long-term impact of early childhood education experience. As the project continued, the development of students' competence in mathematics, literacy and logical problem solving, and their competence in social and communication skills, has assumed more prominence, particularly in the project's ability to relate these to the home resources and experiences that students have, to trace the impact of different factors over time, and to compare the cumulative impact of differences in home and schools resources and experiences.

Seven phases of the project have now been completed - the first when the students were near age 5, the next when they were at age 6 and then at ages 8, 10, 12,14 and 16. A further phase is currently underway collecting data from the sample of young people at age 20.

Competent Learners on the Edge of Adulthood: A summary of key findings from the Competent Learners @ 16 project

Student Perspectives on Leaving School, Pathways, and Careers

Competent Children, Competent Learners is a longitudinal study which began in 1993 and follows the progress of a sample of around 500 New Zealand young people from early childhood education through schooling and beyond. This report focuses on what students at age 16 thought about leaving school, what their biggest concerns and most anticipated opportunities were, what they saw as the most likely barriers to having the kind of life they wanted, how they envisaged spending their first year out of school, what their occupational aspirations, connections, influences, and motivations were and what the idea of “career” meant to them.

Transition to Secondary School: Does it affect age-16 performance?

Competent Children, Competent Learners is a longitudinal study which began in 1993 and follows the progress of a sample of around 500 New Zealand young people from early childhood education through schooling and beyond. The transition to secondary school was focussed on during the previous phase of the study when students were aged 14 (refer Cathy Wylie, Edith Hodgen and Hilary Ferral, 2006). This report provides follow-up analysis of any statistical effects of the transition to secondary school evident at age 16 on students’ engagement and achievement.

On the Edge of Adulthood: Young people's school and out-of-school experiences at 16

Competent Children, Competent Learners is a longitudinal study which began in 1993 and follows the progress of a sample of around 500 New Zealand young people from early childhood education through schooling and beyond. This is the main report from the age-16 phase of the study and details students’ participation in school, their experiences of learning, and their achievement in terms of the study’s competency measures and their NCEA results. It also describes overall patterns of family life, friendships and interests out of school at age 16.

Completely Different or a Bigger Version? Experiences and Effects of the Transition to Secondary School

Most of the Competent Children, Competent Learners study sample changed school when they went on to secondary level. This transition often involved some marked change in the characteristics of the school they attended—moving to a much larger school, or to a single-sex school. Friends were often lost in the process—but they were also gained. But secondary school offered students a wider range of experiences, rather than a totally new world.

Contributions of early childhood education to age-14 performance

This report adds to the research literature on the effects of early childhood education (ECE) by providing findings that show how differences in ECE experience are reflected in differences in performance at age 14, for the Competent Children, Competent Learners sample. In general, the difference between those who had the highest or most level of a particular aspect of ECE experience and others was around 9 percentage points (out of 100), which is a reasonable size difference.

Competent Children and Their Teachers: Learning about Trajectories and Other Schemas

This report outlines an early part of the Competent Children project: an action research study of six months in the lives of 10 children aged between 4 and 5 years. Using recent advances in theory about how children learn to think, researchers worked with the children's parents and early childhood education teachers to help them observe the children and plan ways to enhance their learning.

Competent Children: Influences of Early Childhood Experiences - Pilot Study Report

In January 1992, the Ministry of Education began funding the Competent Children longitudinal study, to look at the effects of early childhood contexts on children. The first-stage funding allowed the research team to undertake a pilot study for the main longitudinal project, and to conduct an action research study of a small number of children to examine the effects of intervening in their curriculum for learning at home and in early childhood settings.
