Three key learning subject areas are assessed: reading literacy, mathematics literacy and scientific literacy, with a main focus on one of these areas in each cycle. Reading is the main focus of PISA 2018.

When:
Field Trial: 15 May to 30 June 2017.
Main Survey: 23 July to 14 September 2018.
Who:
6,173 students (aged between 15-years-3-months and 16-years-2-months at the time of assessment) took part in the PISA 2018 Main Survey. These students were randomly sampled from a representative sample of 194 New Zealand secondary schools. Schools are selected by an international Sampling Consortium using proportional random sampling techniques.
What:
An international research study of a large representative sample of students in New Zealand schools. The study assesses students' achievement in three key areas: reading literacy, mathematic literacy and scientific literacy. A large amount of contextual background information is also collected from students and schools.
How:
Conducted under the auspices of the OECD; and managed within New Zealand by the Ministry of Education.
Where:
79 countries took part in PISA 2018, including all 37 OECD member countries.
