The Perceptions of Teachers and Teaching study completed by Massey University professors Ruth Kane and Mary Mallon in 2006 serves as the “original study” of this report. The Perceptions of Teachers and Teaching research project (originally named Teacher Status Stage Two) was commissioned by the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Teachers Council to examine the relationships between key groups’ perceptions of teachers and teachers’ work in early childhood and school sectors, and the recruitment, retention, performance and capability, and professional status of teachers.

This report contains appendices to the Perceptions of Teachers and Teaching. Final Report. That report addressed what teachers, student teachers, professional leaders, governance groups and senior students identified as major factors affecting teacher recruitment, retention and performance.

This report is part of a series of reports carried out for the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Teachers Council as part of the Teacher Status Project.

The project responds to the need for research that clarifies the nature and influence of current attitudes towards teachers and teaching and identifies priorities for action with respect to recruitment and retention of quality teachers.

This research is an initial literature review to help inform a project on Teacher Status being undertaken by the New Zealand Teachers Council and the Ministry of Education.
