Research Record

Information about research and evaluation work undertaken and commissioned by the Research Division of the Ministry of Education. Also available here is a list of current and old publications.


New Zealand participated in the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL) in 2006. ALL measured the prose literacy, document literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills of a representative sample of respondents aged 16-65 from participating countries. ALL built on the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) which was undertaken in 24 countries - including New Zealand - in 1996.


The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is an educational study that aims to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in the 21st century.


The National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) is designed to assess and understand student achievement across the curriculum at the primary level in New Zealand’s English-medium state schools.


The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is designed to assess adult literacy and numeracy skills, and ability to solve problems in technology-rich environments.


The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an educational research study on children’s reading literacy achievement conducted in countries around the world.


The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international study that assesses three key areas of knowledge and skills: reading, mathematical and science literacy in 15-year-old students.


The Student Outcome Information Kit (SOIK) describes student achievement in reading, writing and mathematics. He Kete Raraunga describes achievement in pānui, tuhituhi and pāngarau.

Study Awards

The Study Awards in Māori and Pasifika Education Research 2015 aim to assist emerging education researchers to complete research-based postgraduate study in Māori and Pasifika Education.


The Teaching and Learning International Survey is an international study of teachers and teaching.


The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an educational research study on student achievement in mathematics and science around the world.

The Research Division

Research Division provides other parts of the Ministry of Education with up-to-date research and evaluation-based information, which is used to develop, modify and implement specific educational policies and practice.
