ALL (Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey)

New Zealand is participating in the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALL). ALL measures the prose literacy, document literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills of a representative sample of respondents aged 16-65 from participating countries. ALL builds on the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) which was undertaken in 24 countries-including New Zealand-in 1996.

The New Zealand Adult Literacy Strategy

Low levels of adult literacy in New Zealand (confirmed by the 1996 International Adult Literacy Survey) are a serious impediment to the development of a skilled workforce.

Raising literacy skills will be essential for the development of the knowledge society New Zealand needs for success in the 21st century.

This sets out a plan to improve New Zealand's adult literacy rates. The Government's Adult Literacy Strategy will make it easier for more New Zealanders to get help in a way that suits their needs.

Learning for Living

Learning for Living is a programme of initiatives on adult foundation learning, including literacy, numeracy and language skills.
