ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Research and Evaluation

Information about current ICT research and evaluation work being undertaken and commissioned by the Ministry of Education.


The Ministry of Education commissions a variety of research and evaluation around the impact of ICTs in education. Overall the Ministry's research and evaluation in ICT aims to:
  1. Assess the impacts of Ministry ICT initiatives across the education sector to strengthen planning and implementation
  2. Explore (e)learning and ICT practices that make a positive difference to learning
  3. Support educators to make critical and reflective decisions about their use of ICT.

Publications

The Ministry of Education has published a number of research reports on ICT, which are available from the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) publication home page.

e-Learning Research Papers

Containing papers and other publications of interest from various e-learning research and evaluation projects in New Zealand. The article "Creating digital age learners through school ICT projects: What can the Tech Angels project teach us?" is now available.

National Sites of Interest

e-Learning Fellowship
The e-learning teacher fellowships programme was established in 2003. It reflects the New Zealand Ministry of Education's commitment to quality teaching, improving the professional capability of teachers, and increasing the use of effective e-learning strategies in schools and early childhood centres.

 DigiOps
 The Digital Opportunities projects are joint partnerships between schools, organisations involved in ICT and the Ministry of Education. The aim of the projects are to improve learning through the use of leading edge technologies.

Teaching and Learning Research Initiative
The Teaching and Learning Research Initiative aims to:

  • build knowledge, through partnership research, about teaching and learning
  • use this knowledge to create improved outcomes for learners
  • create partnerships between practitioners and researchers to maximise the value and usefulness of research

Learning Centre Trust
The LCT has released reports on the state of ICT in New Zealand schools in 2003 and 2001, following on from earlier reports back to 1993.

20/20 Communications Trust
The 20/20 Communications Trust published the 2005 ICT in Schools Report which continues the biannual national survey series that started in 1993. The report tracks New Zealand schools' infrastructure, internet access and use, e-learning developments, and ICT professional development.

International Sites of Interest

PISA

The OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has released a report Are Students Ready for a Technology-Rich World? What PISA Studies Tell Us. The report has data from 41 countries including New Zealand that participated in PISA 2003. It looks at students' home and school access to ICT, the ways they use computers and their attitudes towards ICT. It also compares this data with achievement in reading and mathematics. Student ICT questions are being repeated in PISA 2006.

The site contains a range of research that focus on teacher and school dimensions of ICT integration. http://www.becta.org.uk/index.cfm.
