Data Cube User Guides

A range of user guides have been developed to assist with the use of the data cubes.

A suite of data cubes are available through Education Counts. These data cubes have been developed to help increase the availability and accessibility of information. There are currently two types of data cube:

Education Sector Indicators: these data cubes use the same definitions (and filtering rules) as those used by the relevant education sector indicator. These cubes have been developed to allow users of those indicators to 'drill down' consider the indicator for a variety of different groups.

Data Collections: these data cubes are based on individual data collections. Minimal filtering is undertaken and the data tends to be aggregated to smaller units. In general these data cubes contain more information than those pertaining to education sector indicators.

Unfortunately not all data cubes can be released outside the Ministry as some may allow the identification of individuals.

The following user guides have been developed to assist with the use of the data cubes:

Data Cubes based on Education Sector Indicators
    Board of Trustees
    Early Leaving Exemptions
    School Leavers
    Stand-downs, Suspensions, Exclusions, and Expulsions

Education Sector Indicators

Board of Trustees

Boards of trustees of state and state integrated schools must hold elections for parent and staff representatives every three years. A board may also decide to adopt a mid-term election cycle where half the number of its parent representatives are elected at a mid-term election (18 months after the triennial election) and the remainder are elected at the triennial election. Elections for student representatives are held annually in September in schools with students in Year 9 and above.

Early Leaving Exemptions

There are two early leaving exemption data cubes; one data cube is at 'school level', while the other is at 'demographic level'. Both data cubes contain the measures 'number Early Leaving Exemptions' and 'number of Students', by a range of dimensions.

School Leavers

There are two school leavers data cubes; one data cube is at 'school level', while the other is at 'demographic level'. Both data cubes contain the measure 'number of school leavers', by a range of dimensions including qualification level (university entrance standard, little or no qualification, other).

Stand-downs, Suspensions, Exclusions, and Expulsions

Stand-downs, suspensions, exclusions and expulsions are some of the ways to deal with student behaviour that disrupts teaching and learning and threatens the well-being of other students. These approaches are not used lightly by most schools, but are part of a process to help students re-engage in productive learning and relationships within the school community. There are two student engagement data cubes; one data cube is at 'school level', while the other is at 'demographic level'. Both data cubes contain the four measures, by a range of demographic dimensions.

Data Collections

School Leavers Attainment 2004

There are two school leavers data cubes; one data cube is at 'school level', while the other is at 'demographic level'. Both data cubes contain the measure 'number of school leavers', by a range of dimensions including qualification level. This indicator has 13 different qualification levels, compared to the School Leavers data cube for education sector indicators (above) which has aggregated these to 3 different levels.
