Skills learned include: applying knowledge of physical laws to practical problems, analysing and interpreting data resulting from experiments to test theories and hypotheses, applying appropriate laboratory techniques and procedures to research. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe and the laws which govern their behaviour and to assess and validate physical phenomena to reach conclusions and determine further areas of investigation, and to present these in written and oral form.

Earth Sciences is the study of the nature, composition and structure of the earth including its atmosphere and hydrosphere. Skills learned include: analysing the structure, composition and evolution of the earth, including its atmosphere and hydrosphere, identifying and classifying crystals, rocks, minerals and fossils, analysing, interpreting and preparing geological maps and cross-sections, using geological instruments and field techniques for geological purposes. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the physical properties of the earth's crust and the characteristics of its soil, landforms, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Biological Sciences is the study of the structure, function, reproduction, growth, evolution and behaviour of living organisms. Skills learned include: examining cells and tissue to determine their structure and function, preparing specimens for examination using a variety of techniques, applying appropriate laboratory and field study techniques and procedures to research, analysing and interpreting biological data resulting from experiments to test theories and hypotheses, analysing the factors effecting the growth and reproduction of living organisms. 0303 Process and Resources Engineering

Process and Resources Engineering is the study of locating, assaying and extracting minerals from the earth, refining metals, and producing and analysing the properties of alloys, ceramics, polymers and other materials. It also includes developing and implementing extraction and treatment procedures and designing chemical plants and control systems. Skills learned include: analysing the structure, composition and properties of materials, developing techniques for producing and processing materials, applying chemical and metallurgical techniques to the commercial production of metals and alloys, applying the principles and practices of management and safety to the efficient operation of mines, developing methods of controlling gas and oil extraction, surveying, designing and constructing mines, surveying mineral deposits to assess the economic feasibility of mining, applying mathematical principles of modelling and optimisation to the design of chemical processes, preparing feasibility studies and costings of processes. Automotive Engineering and Technology is the study of planning, designing, developing, producing and maintaining motor vehicles including earth moving equipment, motor cycles and small engines. Skills learned include: designing and developing motor vehicles, earth moving equipment, small engines and their components, interpreting and applying standards to the design of motor vehicles and components, testing and evaluating vehicle performance and safety, diagnosing faults in, servicing and repairing automotive systems and components, utilising the structural properties of materials for vehicle building. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the theory and practice of the design, production and functioning of motor vehicles, vehicle body building, repair, painting and trimming and the maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, earth moving plant, motor cycles and small engines. It also involves developing an ability to organise, cost and complete the tasks required in the design, construction and maintenance of motor vehicles.

0307 Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Technology

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Technology is the study of planning, designing, developing, producing and maintaining machines, mechanical plants and systems, and metal products. It includes designing and maintaining machines, which generate energy, produce goods and services, control pollution, dispose of waste, and move goods and materials. Skills learned include: analysing the effects of stresses and strains on machinery, plant and equipment, designing and drafting mechanical components, undertaking materials investigation and analysis, reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications in order to determine dimensions and tolerances of articles. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of planning, designing, installing, maintaining and repairing plant, machinery and tools and an understanding of fabricating, casting and welding metals. It also involves developing an ability to organise, co-ordinate and complete these tasks.

0309 Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the study of planning, designing, testing and directing the construction of large scale buildings, structures, transport, water supply, pollution control and sewerage systems. It includes economic, functional and environmental considerations in the design and construction. Skills learned include: analysing the composition and strength of various engineering materials, analysing sites and applying the principles of soil mechanics to determine construction methods, applying the principles of fluid mechanics and hydraulics to the design and construction of watercourses and dams, designing civil engineering projects, preparing and interpreting specifications, drawings and plans. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the theory and technology of civil engineering and their application to the construction process, the effects of soils, water and stress on structures and the environmental impact of civil engineering projects. 0311 Geomatic Engineering

Geomatic Engineering is the study of measuring and graphically representing natural and constructed features of the environment. Skills learned include: researching existing records and maps to assist in determining survey requirements, measuring, reducing and adjusting data for various types of surveys, using surveying instruments to determine the position of points on the earth's surface, developing and applying survey and design procedures for preparing survey plans, using techniques such as remote sensing, photogrammetry and land information systems to prepare maps, preparing, editing and revising maps and charts and preparing them for reproduction and publication. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of cadastral law, the theory and technology of surveying in determining location and position and the theory and technology of map design and construction. It also involves developing an ability to organise, cost and complete the tasks required in survey projects and map production.

0313 Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology

Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Technology is the study of planning, designing, developing, testing, installing and maintaining electrical and electronic equipment, machinery and systems. It includes designing and maintaining computers and equipment for communication and electrical power generation and distribution. Skills include: designing electrical and electronic circuits and systems, preparing and interpreting specifications, drawings and regulations, analysing the performance of electrical and electronic systems. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the installation, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment, machinery and systems, electrical and electronic wiring, circuitry and componentry. It also involves developing an understanding of electrical safety and safety regulations and an ability to organise, co-ordinate, and complete the tasks required in the design, testing, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.

Aerospace Engineering and Technology is the study of planning, designing, developing and producing aircraft structures and systems. It also involves assembling, maintaining and repairing airframes, engines, electrical and mechanical instruments, and related aircraft systems. Skills learned include: designing aircraft, aircraft components and support equipment, evaluating test flights to analyse performance and compliance to specifications and safety standards, authorising modifications, repairs and maintenance, conducting diagnostic tests to determine the nature of malfunctions, testing, maintaining and servicing aircraft engines, airframe components and systems, repairing and replacing defective parts and components. Skills include: interpreting building plans, regulations and codes of practice, preparing tenders, supporting contract bids and variations, inspecting work and materials for compliance with specifications, regulations and standards, repairing and maintaining brick and related structures and equipment, determining the type and quantity of materials required, locating and marking positions for connections, fixtures, pipes and areas to be excavated. The main purpose is to develop an understanding of the functional aspects of construction, planning, development and management of buildings. Horticulture and Viticulture is the study of cultivating, propagating and producing intensively managed crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, foliage, nursery crops, trees, shrubs, plants and greenkeeping. It includes the study of establishing, maintaining and managing vineyards, parks and gardens. Skills learned include: identifying pests, diseases and nutritional disorders in plants, designing, establishing and maintaining turf for various sport and recreational facilities, planting, pruning and maintaining shrubs and trees, propagating, cultivating and harvesting intensively managed crops.
