NCEA Achievement Data (Roll based)

Summary

This index page provides links to information and statistical tables relating to NCEA achievement.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) administers the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) for secondary students. This NCEA data is used by both the Ministry of Education and NZQA to analyse achievement and participation at secondary school level.

Between 2002 and 2004 the achievement by secondary school students was in transition due to the phased rollout of the NCEA. Since 2004, NCEA is the main qualification available to senior secondary school students (Years 11 to 13).

The following dimensions are provided in the NCEA achievement tables: ethnicity, gender, decile, regional council, territorial authority (TLA), Ministry of Education education region, and 2008 electorate and Māori electorate. All tables are presented by level of qualification achieved by current year level.

Individual School Level Data on the NZQA website

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)
For individual school level data please see the NZAQ website.  Please note that statistics may differ slightly between the NZQA and the Ministry due to different analytis and collection methods.

Some of the differences are listed below:
  1. NZQA data covers a whole year, whereas the Ministry roll return data is a snapshot at 1 July of each year. This means there may be candidates at a school in the NZQA data who were not at the school in July of that year, either because they left before July or they arrived at the school after July. For this reason, year of schooling and ethnicity information may not be the same between the two data sources.
  2. The school where a candidate’s results are recorded may not match the school where a candidate is enrolled for Ministry of Education purposes. This may be because the school where the candidate is normally enrolled is not registered with NZQA.
