New Zealand's National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) are national qualifications for senior secondary school students and is part of the New Zealand Qualification Framework (NQF).

Typical levels of study

There are three levels of NCEA certificates and most students work at an NCEA level typical for their year group. At each level, students must gain a certain number of credits to achieve an NCEA certificate and credits can be gained over more than one year. 

Typical levels of study are:

Year 11 - NCEA Level 1:
NCEA Level 1 is awarded to people who are credited with a minimum of 80 credits at level 1 or above and who have met the literacy and numeracy requirements.
Year 12 - NCEA Level 2:
NCEA level 2 requires a minimum of 80 credits. Up to 20 credits at NCEA level 1 can be cross-credited towards an NCEA level 2 qualification. 60 or more of the credits must be at level 2 or above.
Year 13 - NCEA Level 3:
NCEA level 3 also requires a minimum of 80 credits. Between 0-20 credits from an NCEA level 2 can be cross-credited towards an NCEA level 3 qualification. 60 or more of the credits must be at level 3 or above.

Calculating Achievement

Students:   Number of students on the Roll as at July 1 in any given year from Ministry roll returns

Candidate: Some one who has achieved at least 1 NCEA credit in any given year

Achievement statistics

n = Count of students who achieved that particular qualification

% = Proportion of students who achieved that qualification, divided by the number of students in that particular year level, in that year.

NCEA Achievement Data Dimensions Notes

The dimensions are:

The number of years a student has studied for.
Student Gender
The gender of the student.
Ethnicity
The prioritised ethnic group a student identifies with.

IFP (International Fee-Paying student): An international student (prior to 2009 these were Foreign Fee Paying students) who meets the full tuition costs on their own or from funds provided to them by sponsors other than the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Students can be studying at a secondary or tertiary level.

NZAID Funded Student: New Zealand Agency for International Development funded student. A student on a scholarship from the New Zealand Agency for International Development. Prior to 2004 this was known as a MFAT scholarship. As of 2009 these students are now part of the domestic count and not included in international fee paying student totals.

Decile:The decile rating is the indicator used to measure the extent to which schools draw pupils from low socio-economic communities. A decile is a 10% grouping.

Decile 1 schools are the 10% of schools with the highest proportion of students from low socio-economic communities. Decile 10 schools are the 10% of schools with the lowest proportion of these students. A school’s decile does not indicate the overall socio-economic mix of the school.

Regional Council:The regional council area (as reported by Statistics New Zealand) the school of the student is located in.
Territorial Authority:The territorial authority area (as reported by Statistics New Zealand) the school of the student is located in.
Education Region:The education region the school of the student is located in. These are four administrative regions created by the Ministry of Education and aligned with the Ministry’s four regional offices.
Year:Data is presented for 2004 through to 2010. Data is updated on a yearly basis.
