Summary
This report is part of the School Roll Summary Report: July 2003. It provides a snapshot of Pasifika-medium education in New Zealand Schools as at 1 July 2003. Pasifika-medium education is where a Pasifika language is the medium of instruction for more than three hours per week.

There were 22 schools offering Pasifika medium education at 1 July 2003. There were two more secondary schools and two less primary schools offering Pacifika medium education than at 1 July 2002. There are now three secondary schools offering Samoan as a medium of instruction. There are 18 primary schools and one composite school offering Pacifika medium education.
A total of 1,737 students were involved in Pasifika medium at all levels at July 2003. There has been an overall decrease of 138 (7.4%) in the number of students in classes where the medium of instruction is one of these four Pacific languages: Samoan, Cook Island Māori, Tongan, or Niue. One school offered all four languages as the medium of instruction, and three schools offered two languages each.
