Māori-medium Education as at 1 July 2011

Summary

This report provides a snapshot of Māori-medium education as at 1 July 2011. Māori-medium education programmes involve students being taught either all or some curriculum subjects in the Māori language, either in immersion or bilingual programmes.

Māori-medium Education

Māori-medium education programmes involve students being taught either all or some curriculum subjects in the Māori language, either in immersion or bilingual programmes.

Students who are taught in the Māori language for 51-100 per cent of class time are more likely to become fluent in Te Reo Māori.

 

Students

The total number of students involved in Māori-medium education (Levels 1-4a) decreased by 2.0 per cent (538 students) between July 2010 and July 2011 from 27,532 to 26,994 students.

The number of Māori students involved in Māori-medium education (Levels 1-4a) decreased by 103 students (0.4 per cent) to 24,702 since July 2010.

At the primary level (Years 1-8), enrolments have decreased by 4.0 per cent (909 students).  At the secondary level (Years 9-13), enrolments increased by 7.5 per cent (371 students).

Schools

Māori immersion schools are schools where all students are recorded at Māori-medium education Level 1 (81-100 per cent of class time in Māori).  Enrolments at Māori immersion schools increased by 1.9 per cent (129 students) since July 2010.  However, Level 1 enrolments over all schools, including schools with immersion units, increased by 0.7 per cent (80 students) since July 2010.

Schools where all students are in Levels 1-4a (12 per cent of class time and above), but are not all at Level 1, are called bilingual schools. Enrolments at bilingual schools decreased by 17.5 per cent (1,514 students) between July 2010 and July 2011.  In comparison, Levels 1-4a enrollments across all schools decreased by 2.0 per cent (538 students) since July 2010.

 

Te Reo Māori as a Separate Subject

In July 2011, there were 20,131 students learning Te Reo Māori as a separate subject for three or more hours per week, an increase of 0.6 per cent (121 students).  This compares with a 5.3 per cent (1,118 students) decrease in the previous year.

There were 13,187 Māori students learning Te Reo Māori as a separate subject for three or more hours per week. This is a decrease of 129 Māori students (1.0 per cent) since July 2010.
