Māori-medium Education

Summary

Māori-medium education takes place from early childhood to tertiary, in various settings, including:

- köhanga reo in the early childhood sector
- other bilingual and immersion programmes in early childhood education centres
- kura kaupapa Māori (covering years 1-8) and wharekura (covering years 1-13)
- immersion and bilingual programmes in mainstreams schools
- wānanga in the tertiary sector.

Data here relates to Māori-medium education in schools:

Māori-medium education programmes involve students being taught either all or some curriculum subjects in the Māori language,
either in immersion (Māori language only) or bilingual (Māori and English) programmes. Four levels of immersion are defined for
planning and monitoring purposes. These are:

- Level 1: 81-100 percent immersion
- Level 2: 51-80 percent immersion
- Level 3: 31-50 percent immersion
- Level 4: 12-30 percent immersion

- Enrolments in Māori-medium Programmes by Level of Immersion (in 2004 and 2006 data)
- Enrolments in Māori-medium Education for 3 or more hours per week by School Sector (in 2004 and 2006 data)
- Number and Percentage of Students in Te Reo Māori (including students in Māori-medium Education) for 3 or more
  hours per week by School Sector (in 2004 and 2006 data)
