Numbers of Foreign Fee Paying Students

Foreign fee-paying student numbers decreased by 3.8 per cent since July 2007 from 10,204 to 9,815 students.  Foreign fee-paying students represent 1.3 per cent of the total school population.

The decrease in foreign fee-paying students occurred in the primary sector (Years 1-8) with a decrease of 19.5 per cent (561 students) enrolled in 2008 compared to 2007.  The secondary sector (Years 9-15) had slightly more foreign fee-paying students in July 2008, with an increase of 2.4 per cent (172 students). 

The region with the largest share of all foreign fee-paying students continues to be Auckland with 49.3 per cent of all foreign fee-paying students (4,835 students).  The number of foreign fee-paying students in Auckland has decreased by 5.1 per cent (258 students) between July 2007 and July 2008.

The region with the second largest share of all foreign fee-paying students continues to be Canterbury with 18.6 per cent of all foreign fee-paying students (1,824 students).  The number of foreign fee-paying students in Canterbury has decreased by 4.6 per cent (88 students) between July 2007 and July 2008.

Foreign Fee Paying Students - Region of Origin

The majority of foreign fee-paying students originate from the Asia region (85.7 per cent).  Of all foreign fee-paying students, 45.2 per cent come from South Korea, 12.3 per cent come from Japan and 13.7 per cent come from China.
The number of foreign fee-paying students enrolling from China (1,345 students) showed an increase of 5.2 per cent between July 2007 and 2008.  However enrolments from South Korea (4,437 students) represented a decrease of 12.2 per cent between July 2007 and 2008.
