Pasifika Medium Education as at 1 July 2004

Pasifika medium education is where students are taught curriculum subjects in both Pasifika languages and English (bilingual) or in Pasifika languages only (immersion). Pasifika medium education is where students are taught curriculum subjects in both Pacific languages and English (bilingual) or in Pacific languages only (immersion).

There were 24 schools offering Pasifika medium education at 1 July 2004. There were three more primary schools and one less secondary school offering Pasifika medium education than at 1 July 2003. There are now two secondary schools offering Samoan as a medium of instruction. There are 21 primary schools and one composite school offering Pasifika medium education.

A total of 2,042 students were involved in Pasifika medium at all levels at July 2004. There has been an overall increase of 310 (17.8%) in the number of students in classes where the medium of instruction is one of these four Pacific languages: Samoan, Cook Island Maori, Tongan or Niue. One school offered all four languages as the medium of instruction, and seven schools offered two languages each.
