Pasifika-medium Education as at 1 July 2004

Summary

This report is part of the School Roll Summary Report: July 2004. It provides a snapshot of Pasifika-medium education in New Zealand Schools as at 1 July 2004. Pasifika-medium education is where a Pasifika language is the medium of instruction for more than three hours per week.

There were 24 schools offering Pasifika medium education at 1 July 2004. There were three more primary schools and one less secondary school offering Pasifika medium education than at 1 July 2003. There are now two secondary schools offering Samoan as a medium of instruction. There are 21 primary schools and one composite school offering Pasifika medium education.

A total of 2,042 students were involved in Pasifika medium at all levels at July 2004. There has been an overall increase of 310 (17.8%) in the number of students in classes where the medium of instruction is one of these four Pacific languages: Samoan, Cook Island Maori, Tongan or Niue. One school offered all four languages as the medium of instruction, and seven schools offered two languages each.
