Pasifika-medium Education as at 1 July 2008

Summary

This report is part of the School Roll Summary Report: July 2008. It provides a snapshot of Pasifika-medium education in New Zealand Schools as at 1 July 2008. Pasifika-medium education is where a Pasifika language is the medium of instruction for more than three hours per week.

Pasifika-medium Education Rolls

A total of 32 schools offered Pasifika-medium education in 2008; 22 primary schools, eight secondary schools and two composite schools.  This was four fewer than in July 2007.

There were 1,641 students involved in Pasifika-medium education.  This is an increase of 143 students (5.2 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with an increase of 229 students (9.1 per cent) in the previous year.

Pasifika-medium as a Secondary Subject

At secondary level, there were 33 schools offering a Pacific language.  This is one more than in 2007.

There were 2,809 enrolments in a Pacific language at secondary level.  This is an increase of 274 enrolments (10.8 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with a decrease of 89 enrolments (3.4 per cent) in the previous year.

Samoan was the most popular Pacific language with 82.3 per cent of all enrolments in a Pacific language.
