There were 760,859 students at 1 July 2009, an increase of 0.4 per cent (2,765 students) from 1 July 2008.

Rolls by Type of School
Primary and Intermediate school rolls decreased by 0.4 per cent (1,686 students) to 434,857 students in July 2009. Secondary school rolls increased by 1.4 per cent (3,723 students) to 273,872 students in July 2009. Composite school rolls (including the Correspondence School) increased by 1.4 per cent (669 students) to 49,259 students in July 2009. Special school rolls increased by 2.1 per cent (59 students) to 2,871 in July 2009. The Correspondence School roll increased by 5.2 per cent (301 students) to 6,076 students in July 2009.
Rolls by Sector
In the primary sector (Years 1 to 8) school rolls decreased by 0.2 per cent (1,154) to 476,747 students. In the secondary sector (Years 9 to 15) school rolls increased by 1.4 per cent (3,919) to 284,112 students.
Rolls by Gender
In 2009, there were 387,741 male (51 per cent) and 373,118 female (49 per cent) students. These proportions are unchanged from the previous year. At the primary levels (Years 1-8), the male proportion (51.3 per cent) was slightly higher than the female proportion (48.7 per cent). At secondary levels (Years 9-15) there is a narrower gap, with the male proportion being 50.4 per cent and the female proportion being 49.6 per cent. Male enrolments are slightly higher than females at the lower secondary level (Years 9-11) but from Years 12-15, female enrolments are higher than males.

Rolls by Region
Auckland region showed the greatest increase in student rolls between July 2008 and July 2009 while Manawatu-Wanganui showed the greatest decrease.

Domestic Rolls by Ethnicity
The domestic student count excludes international fee-paying students. There were 751,330 domestic students as at 1 July 2009 which is an increase of 3,138 students (0.4 per cent) since July 2008. There were 68,784 domestic Asian students. This is an increase of 3,201 students (4.9 per cent) since July 2008. Asian students make up 9.2 per cent of the domestic roll. There were 73,081 Pasifika students. This is an increase of 1,759 students (2.5 per cent) since July 2008. Pasifika students make up 9.7 per cent of the domestic roll. There were 166,998 Māori students. This is an increase 1,573 students (1.0 per cent) since July 2008. Māori students make up 22.2 per cent of the domestic roll. There were 424,242 European/Pākehā students. This is a decrease of 4,308 students (1.0 per cent) since July 2008. NZ European/Pākehā students make 56.5 per cent per cent of the domestic roll.
