Student Numbers as at 1 July 2008

Introduction

There were 758,094 students at 1 July 2008.  This is a decrease of 0.2 per cent  (1,812 students) from 1 July 2007.  This compares with a decrease of 0.1 per cent (855 students) between July 2006 and July 2007.

Rolls by Type of School

Primary & Intermediate school rolls decreased by 0.6 per cent (2,744 students) to 436,543 students in July 2008.

Secondary school rolls increased slightly  (64 students) to 270,149 students in July 2008.

Composite school rolls (including the correspondence school) increased by 1.5 per cent (626 students) to 48,590 students in July 2008.

Special school rolls increased by 0.5 per cent (13 students) to 2,812 since July 2007.

The Correspondence School roll increased by 4.1 per cent (229 students) to 5778 students in July 2008.

Rolls by Sector

In the primary sector (Years 1 to 8) school rolls decreased by 0.6 per cent (2,708) to 477,901 students.  Between July 2006 and July 2007, there was a decrease of 0.5 per cent (2,160 students).

In the secondary sector (Years 9 to 15) school rolls increased 0.3 per cent (896) to 280,193 students. This compares with 0.5 per cent growth (1305 students)  between July 2006 and 2007.

The number of students enrolled in year 1 increased in July 2008 by 1.3 per cent (743 students) to 57,149, compared to a 2.8 per cent fall (1,634 students) in 2007.

Rolls by Gender

In 2008, there were 386,525 male (51 per cent) and 371,569 female (49 per cent) students. These proportions are unchanged from the previous year.

At the primary levels (Years 1-8), the male proportion (51.4 per cent) was slightly higher than the female proportion (48.6 per cent).

At secondary levels (Years 9-15) there is a narrower gap, with the male proportion being 50.2 per cent and the female proportion being 49.8 per cent.

Male enrolments are slightly higher than females at the lower secondary level (Years 9-11) but from years 12-15, female enrolments are higher than males.

Rolls by Region

Four regions (Auckland, Waikato, Canterbury and Tasman) had small increases in student rolls between July 2007 and July 2008.  In 2007 Waikato had shown a decrease in roll numbers.

Queenstown-Lakes and Selwyn districts have shown the largest percentage increases out of the 74 Territorial Authorities for the last two years with Queenstown-Lakes rolls increasing 5.7 per cent (175 students) and Selwyn district rolls increasing 3.8 per cent (233 students) between July 2007 and July 2008 compared with 3.1 per cent (91 students) and 4.6 per cent (269 students) between July 2006 and July 2007.

Domestic Rolls by Ethnicity

The domestic student count excludes foreign fee-paying and NZAID students.

There were 748,192 domestic students as at 1 July 2008 which was a decrease of 1,436 students (0.2 per cent) since July 2007.

There were 65,583 domestic Asian students.  This is an increase of 2,716 students (4.3 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with an increase of 1,010 students (1.6 per cent) in the previous year. Asian students make up 8.8 per cent of the domestic roll.  This is up slightly from 8.4 per cent in July 2007.

There were 71,322 Pasifika students. This is an increase of 1,434 students (2.1 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with an increase of 1,829 students (2.7 per cent) in the previous year.  Pasifika students make up 9.5 per cent of the domestic roll. This is up slightly from 9.3 per cent in July 2007.

There were 165,425 Māori students.  This is an increase of 1,405 students (0.9 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with an increase of 1,635 students (1.0 per cent) in the previous year.  Māori students make up 22.1 per cent of the domestic roll. This is up slightly from 21.9 per cent in July 2007.

There were 428,706 NZ European/Pākehā and Other European students.  This is a decrease of 8,102 students (1.8 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with a decrease of 6,643 students (1.5 per cent) in the previous year. NZ European/Pākehā and Other European students make 57.3 per cent of the domestic roll.  This is down slightly from 58.3 per cent in July 2007.
