Māori-medium Education as at 1 July 2008

Summary

This report is part of the School Roll Summary Report: 2008. It provides a snapshot of Māori-medium education as at 1 July 2008. Māori-medium education programmes involve students being taught either all or some curriculum subjects in the Māori language, either in immersion or bilingual programmes.

Māori-medium Education

Students

The total number of students involved in Māori-medium Education increased between July 2007 and July 2008 by 0.8 per cent (238 students).  This compares with a decrease of 2.9 per cent (846 students) between July 2006 and July 2007.

The number of Māori involved in Māori Medium-mducation fell by 1.0 per cent (260 students) between July 2007 and July 2008.

At the primary level (Years 1-8), enrolments have decreased by 0.6 per cent (119 students), whereas at the secondary level (Years 9-15), enrolments have increased by 2.8 per cent (137 students).

Schools

Māori Medium immersion schools are schools where all students are recorded at Māori-medium Education Level 1 (81-100 per cent of class time in Māori). Enrolments at Māori immersion schools increased by 7.2 per cent (466 students).

Schools where all students are at Levels 1-4a (12 per cent of class time and above) are called bilingual schools.  Enrolments at bilingual schools grew by 38.9 per cent (2,909 students) between July 2007 and July 2008.

Te Reo Māori as a separate subject

In July 2008, there were 19,158 students learning Te Reo Māori as a separate subject for three or more hours per week. This is a decrease of 1,034 students (5.1 per cent) since July 2007.  This compares with an increase of 317 students (1.6 per cent) in the previous year.

There were 12,969 Māori students learning Te Reo Māori as a separate subject for three or more hours per week.  This is a decrease of 330 Māori students (1.6 per cent) since July 2006.  This compares with a decrease of 247 Māori students (2.5 per cent) in the previous year.

The number of Māori learning Te Reo Māori as a separate subject for three or more hours per week represents 7.8 per cent of all Māori students. This compares to 8.1 per cent in 2007.
