Teachers in Licensed Teacher-Led Early Childhood Services

As at 1 July 2008 there were 16,861 teachers in licensed teacher-led early childhood services. The data can be viewed by a range of dimensions. Teacher data are available from the following tables.
Teachers in Licensed Teacher-Led Early Childhood Services data dimensions
The dimensions are:
Authority:
The ownership of the early childhood service that the teacher is in, that is, Community Based or Privately Owned. Note that the Correspondence school is state owned and has its own authority.
Ethnic Group:
The ethnic group that the teacher belongs to, for example, Māori, Asian. The ethnic group data is presented at level 1 and prioritised.
Full-time and Part-time Status
Refers to whether the teacher is teaching full-time or part-time. Full-time equates to 25 hours per week or more child contact time.
Gender
The gender of the teacher, ie male or female.
Qualified Status:
Refers to whether the teacher is qualified or not qualified. To be qualified, the teacher must hold a recognised ECE teaching qualification that leads to registration with the NZ Teachers Council.
Type of Service:
The type of licensed teacher-led service that the teacher is in. These types include Kindergartens, Education & Care Services, Casual Education & Care Services, Homebased Services, and the Correspondence School. Note: Caregivers in Homebased Services are excluded, as are adults on duty in parent-led services, including playcentres and Te Kōhanga Reo.
Education Region:
The education region of the service that the teacher is located in. These are four administrative regions created by the Ministry of Education and aligned with the Ministry’s four regional offices. The Correspondence School is shown separately as it covers multiple education regions throughout the country. Care must be taken when interpreting the geographic location of Homebased services as services will be listed under the location of the co-ordinator rather than the actual location of the service.
Regional Council:
The regional council area of the service that the teacher is located in. Regional council boundaries are defined by Statistics New Zealand. The Correspondence School is shown separately as it covers multiple regional council boundaries. Care must be taken when interpreting the geographic location of Homebased services as services will be listed under the location of the co-ordinator rather than the actual location of the service.
Territorial Authority:
The territorial authority area of the service that the teacher is located in. Territorial authority boundaries are defined by Statistics New Zealand. The Correspondence School is shown separately as it covers multiple territorial authority boundaries. Care must be taken when interpreting the geographic location of Homebased services as services will be listed under the location of the co-ordinator rather than the actual location of the service.

Data is presented for 2001 through to 2008.
