TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 2006/07
Publication Details
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) measures trends in mathematics and science achievement at the fourth and eighth grades (Years 5 and 9) as well as monitoring curricular implementation and identifying the most effective instructional practices from around the world. This is the fourth cycle and, New Zealand is one of nearly 60 countries to take part. New Zealand participated in TIMSS 2006/07 at the Year 5 level only.

Classroom Context: The Classroom Context for Year 5 Students' Mathematics and Science Achievement in 2006
This report examines student, teacher, and principal responses to questions on teaching and learning within the classroom context; these questions were contained in background questionnaires in the TIMSS 2006/07 study. Characteristics of teachers, including their preparedness to teach mathematics and science, teaching activities that took place within mathematics and science lessons, resource, and teacher attitudes and perceptions are explored. Comparisons have also been made with New Zealand across cycles and also with other countries.

School Context: The School Context for Year 5 Students' Mathematics and Science Achievement in 2006

Science - Trends in Year 5 science achievement 1994 to 2006
This report describes the science achievement of Year 5 students in TIMSS 2006/07. Trends in New Zealand’s achievement over the 12 years from 1994 to 2006 are examined, along with comparisons with other countries. Analyses of achievement by sub-groupings (such as gender and ethnicity) and background information are also presented. It was originally published in December 2008 and revised in September 2009 due to the mislabelling of the content domains knowing and applying. The current version rectifies this error.
