Student Performance on Open-ended Questions in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study: New Zealand results

The aim of this report is to present a summary of the performance of New Zealand students on each of the free-response items. Free-response mathematics and science items, along with the coding rubrics as in the international coding manual, and with summary statistics, are included in the report.

Introduction

New Zealand was one of more than 40 countries to participate in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) during 1994 and 1995. Three populations of students were assessed in both mathematics and science in order to gain information on students’ knowledge and understanding in the two subject areas. In addition to achievement data, background information was also gathered from students, teachers, and school principals, as well as there being an exploratory study on mathematics and science curricula.
