  • Profile & Trends 2015: Tertiary Education Outcomes and Qualification Completions [Part 2 of 6]

    This is edition 18 in an annual series on the tertiary education sector. Tertiary Education Outcomes and Qualification Completions is the second of six reports to be published in the Profile and Trends 2015 series.

    The key findings of Tertiary Education Outcomes and Qualification Completions Enrolments for 2015 were:

    • 21 percent of adults held a bachelors or higher qualification, 18 percent held a level 4 to 7 diploma or certificate and 13 percent of adults held either a level 1 to 3 tertiary certificate, or other post-school qualification, as their highest qualification.
    • 161,000 tertiary education qualifications were completed, 22,500 by international students.
    • The median hourly earnings of people with a bachelors or higher qualification were 65 percent higher than for people without a qualification.

    The key findings of the New Zealand's Annual Tertiary Enrolments for 2015 were:

    • 420,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2015, including 61,400 international students.
    • Domestic enrolments decreased from 2014 to 2015 for most age groups.
    • International student numbers increased by 14 percent from 2014 to 2015.

    The key findings of Tertiary Education Outcomes and Qualification Completions in 2014 were:

    • The proportion of adults with a bachelors or higher qualification continued to increase from 20 percent in 2013 to 21 percent in 2014.
    • In 2014, 163,000 tertiary education qualifications were completed, 19,200 by international students.
    • From 2009 to 2014, the course completion rates increased for all ethnic groups, with the largest increases for Māori and Pasifika students.

    The key findings of New Zealand's Annual Tertiary Enrolments for 2014 were:

    • 418,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2014, including 53,900 international students.
    • Enrolment numbers increased from 2013 to 2014 for domestic students aged 18 to 19 years, while they remained stable for 20 to 24 year-olds and declined for students aged 25 years and over.
    • Tertiary education participation rate has been increasing among the ethnic groups for bachelors and postgraduate qualifications and decreasing for non-degree qualifications.

  • Profile and Trends 2013: New Zealand's Tertiary Education System

    This is edition 16 in an annual series on the tertiary education sector. They key findings for 2013 were:

    • 418,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2013, including 48,000 international students.
    • The number of industry trainees remained stable from 2012 to 2013, while the number of apprentices increased for the first time since 2008.
    • People with tertiary qualifications have lower unemployment rates and higher earnings. In 2013, the earnings of people with a tertiary qualification were 62 percent higher than for people with no qualifications.

    This is edition 14 in an annual series on the tertiary education sector.

    The key findings for 2011 were:

    • 456,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2011, including 48,100 international students.
    • There were more young people taking on higher-level tertiary qualifications in 2011, while enrolments in non-degree qualifications decreased due mainly to fewer enrolments by people aged 25 years and over.
    • International student numbers are likely to rise further in 2012.

    This is edition 13 in an annual series on the tertiary education sector. The key findings for 2010 were:

    • 466,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2010, including 45,600 international students.
    • More young tertiary students now continue with postgraduate study after completing a bachelors degree and four out of every five young tertiary students study level 4 qualifications and above.
    • International tertiary student numbers increased by more than 5 percent in 2010. International student numbers are likely to rise further in 2011.

  • Profile & Trends 2009: New Zealand's Tertiary Education Sector

    This is edition 12 in an annual series on the tertiary education sector. Key findings from the 2009 report are:

    • 469,000 students were enrolled in formal study programmes in 2009, including 43,500 international students. There were 202,000 industry trainees in 2009.
    • Young tertiary students are studying at a more advanced level. More than three out of four young tertiary students are now studying level 4 qualifications and above.
    • International tertiary student numbers increased by more than 9 percent in 2009. In 2010, international enrolments are expected to increase by about 8 percent, while domestic enrolments are expected to increase slightly.
