Conclusions
It is clear that the issue of school attendance and absenteeism is a complex one which impacts not only on the school but also on the relationship the school has with its board of trustees, parents, and the wider community.
The research undertaken for this study has identified a number of strategies used by schools in monitoring school attendance and following up absences; strategies which other schools may wish to adopt or modify to accommodate their own unique circumstances. The strategies identified, including those to encourage all children to attend school, are consistent with those identified by the literature.
