School Roll Summary Report: July 2009

This report highlights key results from the 1 July 2009 annual statistical return from schools. It includes statistics on the number of schools, changes in school enrolment of domestic and foreign fee-paying students, participation in Māori-medium and Pasifika-medium education, early childhood attendance by year 1 students and secondary school subject choices.

Number of Schools

  • At 1 July 2009, there were 2,560 state and private schools in New Zealand. This is one less school than in July 2008.

School Rolls

  • There were 760,859 students at 1 July 2009, an increase of 0.4 per cent (2,765 students) from 1 July 2008.
  • Primary sector rolls (Years 1 to 8) have decreased by 0.2 per cent (1,154 students) to 476,747 students since July 2008.
  • Secondary sector rolls (Years 9 to 15) have increased by 1.4 per cent (3,919 students) to 284,112 students since July 2008.

International Fee-Paying students

  • International fee-paying student numbers decreased by 2.9 per cent since July 2008 from 9,815 to 9,529 students.

Māori Medium Education

  • The total number of students involved in Māori Medium Education (Levels 1-4a) decreased by 2.0 per cent (562 students) between July 2008 and July 2009.

Pasifika-medium education

  • In 2009, there were 1,465 students involved in Pasifika-medium education.  This is a decrease of 176 students (10.7 per cent) since July 2008.

Early childhood education prior to starting school

  • In 2009, 95.1 per cent of Year 1 students regularly attended early childhood education before starting school. This is slightly higher than 2008 and reflects continuing high level participation in early childhood education.
