School Roll Summary Report: July 2008

This report highlights key results from the 1 July 2008 annual statistical return from schools. It includes statistics on the number of schools, changes in school enrolment of domestic and foreign fee-paying students, participation in Māori-medium and Pasifika-medium education, early childhood attendance by year 1 students and secondary school subject choices.

Number of Schools
- At 1 July 2008, there were 2,563 state and private schools in New Zealand. This is eight fewer schools than in July 2007.
School Rolls
- There were 758,094 students at 1 July 2008, a decrease of 0.2 per cent (1,812 students) from 1 July 2007. This compares with a 0.1 per cent decrease between July 2006 and July 2007.
- Primary sector rolls (Years 1 to 8) have decreased by 0.6 per cent (2,708 students) since July 2007.
- Secondary sector rolls (Years 9 to 15) increased 0.3 per cent (743 students) since July 2007.
Foreign Fee-Paying students
- Foreign fee-paying student numbers decreased by 3.8 per cent since July 2007 from 10,204 to 9,815 students.
- Enrolments from South Korea (4,437) showed a decrease of 614 students (12.2 per cent) from enrolments at July 2007.
Māori Medium Education
- The total number of students involved in Māori Medium Education increased by 0.8 per cent (238 students) between July 2007 and July 2008. This compares with a 2.9 per cent decrease between July 2006 and July 2007.
- Enrolments at Māori immersion schools have increased by 7.2 per cent between July 2007 and July 2008. Enrolments at bilingual schools have increased by 38.9 per cent.
Pasifika-medium education
- In 2008, there were 1,641 students involved in Pasifika-medium education. This is an increase of 143 students (5.2 per cent) since July 2007. This compares with an increase of 229 students (9.1 per cent) in the previous year.
Early childhood education prior to starting school
- In 2008, 94.7 per cent of Year 1 students regularly attended early childhood education before starting school. This is the same as 2007 and reflects continuing high level participation in early childhood education.
