Ahuatanga Māori

Māori Traditions.

Ako

Effective teaching and learning for Māori students and the conditions that support it. Within the Ka Hikitia – Managing for Success strategy, ako comprises two important aspects: culture counts and productive partnerships.

Best Evidence Synthesis

Research that draws on different pieces of existing research, increasing the sector's understanding about what works in education.

Bilingual classrooms / units

Classes where some learners in the school are involved in te reo Māori (Māori-medium) education for between three and 20 hours per week.

Cluster

A group of schools.

Decile

A rating system that rates schools by the socio-economic status of its community.

Disposition

Dispositions are 'habits of mind', or the willingness and inclination to do something, such as:  

     
  • recognising when it is relevant to draw on particular skills, knowledge, and values
  •  
  • being motivated to use these to achieve the task at hand
  •  
  • knowing how to do so appropriately.

English medium education

Teaching through the English language.

Evidence

The range of information and data to inform practice.

Hapū

Sub-tribe.

Immersion schools

Schools in which students are taught through Māori language for more than 80% of the time.

Iwi

Tribe – social group of people with shared family links, culture and language dialect.

The Māori Education Strategy 2008-2012.

Kaitakawaenga

Group Special Education (GSE) employs Kaitakawaenga (Māori Liaison Advisors) to work alongside GSE staff to help them provide services to tamariki and whānau.

Kaiwhakahaere Ahurea         

A manager that provides supervision and support in a cultural way. This includes the special and unique aspects of who and how Māori are in te Ao Māori. It is a term inclusive of the nature of the mahi with special education

Kaupapa Māori Education

Māori education that incorporates a Māori world view and ways of teaching in a range of settings including bilingual and immersion settings.

Kōhanga Reo

Māori language settings (early childhood education services) affiliated with Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust.

Kuia and Koroua

Female and Male elders (respectively).

Kura-a-iwi

Kura established under section 156 of the Education Act, as a special character school delivering Māori medium education and aligned to a particular iwi.

Kura kaupapa Maori

Kura established under section 155 of the Education Act, as a kura supported by Te Rūnanganui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa with the learning programmes based on Te Aho Matua -Māori philosophies.

Kura Māori

Kura established under section 156 of the Education Act, as a special character school delivering Māori medium education

Kura Motuhake

Generic term used when referring to all kura established under section 156 whether they are attached to an iwi or not.

Kura teina

Not fully an independent school established under section155 of the Education Act, development/establishment stage, aligned to a kura tuakana

Levers for change

Tools or ways of working that will bring about change.

Marautanga a kura

School/Localised curriculum in a Māori medium setting

Māori language education

All education that teaches Māori language skills and delivers education in and through te reo Māori.

Māori language Education Framework

A framework that will guide government investment in achieving quality outcomes in Māori language education.

Māori-medium

Teaching that includes use of te reo Māori. Learners are taught curriculum subjects in either both te reo Māori and English or in te reo Māori only.

National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA)

National qualification for secondary schools learners.

NEMP

The National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP) reports on the achievement of Year 4 and 8 students in three learning areas: Reading and Speaking, Aspects of Technology and Music.

Pākehā

New Zealander of predominately European descent.

Pasifika

People of Pacific Island descent.

Pouwhakataki

A role in charge of linking tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau with educators – to inform whānau about education.

Private training establishments

Training establishments in New Zealand that offer a wide range of courses, most tending to specialise in particular subjects.

Puna Reo

An early childhood centre.

Rangatahi

Māori youth.

Rohe

Area / specific geographical area.

Rōpū

Group.

School improvement projects

Targeted professional development programmes to lift learner achievement.

Socio-economic

Of or involving both social and economic factors.

Statement of Intent

Documents that sets how a government agency will deliver their contribution to government goals and priorities.

Student Engagement Initiatives

A project focused on engaging learners in school.

Taonga

Treasure, something of value.

Te Aho Matua

Māori charter that sets out principles and practices of teaching and learning for kura kaupapa Māori (schools designated under section 155 of the Education Act 1989).

Te Mana (ki te Taimata)

An initiative that encourages learners of all ages to take responsibility of their education.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

The national curriculum for Māori-medium schools.

Te Puni Kōkiri

The government agency for Māori development.

Te Reo Rangatira

Qualification programme designed for learners who are fluent speakers of te reo Māori, for example where instructions and exam questions are in te reo Māori.

Tikanga Māori

Māori custom (shared practices and principles).

Waiata

Song.

Wānanga

Māori tertiary establishment characterised by teaching and research that develops, maintains, advances and disseminates Māori knowledge.

Wharekura

Māori medium secondary education provision.

Whānau

Family or group of people with a close common bond.
