Competent Children and Their Teachers: Learning about Trajectories and Other Schemas

This report outlines an early part of the Competent Children project: an action research study of six months in the lives of 10 children aged between 4 and 5 years. Using recent advances in theory about how children learn to think, researchers worked with the children's parents and early childhood education teachers to help them observe the children and plan ways to enhance their learning.

Outline of the Report

The report is structured into seven chapters, covering:

  • Chapter One: introduction and background information.
  • Chapter Two: covers constructive pedagogy, and schemas and their importance in young children's learning.
  • Chapter Three: detailed descriptions of research methods.
  • Chapter Four: descriptions of the children and early childhood centres.
  • Chapter Five: case study material on the children focussing on the schemas which were dominant in their artistic endeavours.
  • Chapter Six: the data on the children in the two centres which changed their curriculum to follow the children's interests are compared to the children in the comparison centres.
  • Chapter Seven: discussion of the findings.
