Our goal is to provide information about education statistics and research in New Zealand as efficiently and usefully as possible.  We do not provide advertising through our website. We do not try to identify individual users.

We have endeavoured to make our site work as smoothly as possible without cookies.  And for users to be able to have as much functionality as possible without cookies.

Our cookie policy informs you about the use of cookies or similar storage technologies (hereinafter “cookies”) on this website.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are stored by your browser on your device to save certain information or image files, such as pixels. The next time you visit our website on the same device, the information saved in the cookies will subsequently be transmitted either to our website or to another website to which the cookie belongs.

Through the information saved and returned, the respective website recognises that you have already accessed and visited it with the browser you use on that device.  We use this information to be able to design and display the website in an optimum way in line with your preferences.

Our web site content management system uses a temporary session cookie and we use Google Analytics, a digital analytics software when you visit our site.  These ‘core’ cookies are used even if you decline cookies in the Cookie Banner.

Other cookies, such as those used in our Tableau and Microsoft Power BI dashboard solutions are only used if you provide consent by selecting accept cookies in our Cookie Banner.

You can, of course, customise your cookie settings at any time by activating or deactivating individual cookies, even our core cookies.

Deactivation or deletion of all cookies

You can set your web browser in such a way that cookies are generally prevented from being saved to your device and/or that you are asked each time whether you are in agreement with cookies being enabled. Please note that generally deactivating cookies may lead to functional restrictions on our website.

Core cookies

SQ_SYSTEM_SESSION.  This is a session cookie used by Matrix, our content management system. This cookie is erased when the user closes their Web browser. The session cookie is stored in temporary memory and is not retained after the browser is closed. Session cookies do not collect information from the user’s computer.

Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics

We use Google Tag Manager to deploy various types of tags to our website, specifically the Google Analytics tracking code

We use Google Analytics to capture and store web page tracking data, and to produce usage reports about our website, for example:

  • how many people visited our website yesterday?
  • what country are they from?
  • how many pages did they visit per session?
  • how many visitors bounced off our website (without performing any action)?
  • which pages were the most popular
  • etc.?

No effort is made to identify individual visitors
