Tertiary Student Enrolment and Completions data (TSEC)

Tertiary Student Enrolment and Completions (or TSEC) data is an annual series of data sets on tertiary education enrolments and completions in qualifications. The series is available back to 1994 and is used to produce the majority of tertiary education statistics on participation and completion published on Education Counts. This data set is maintained by the Tertiary Sector Performance Analysis and Reporting section, in the Ministry of Education.

The data sets are derived from SDR (Single Data Return) collections of tertiary enrolments and completions. The TSEC data extends the SDR data sets by including a derived unique student number. This student number is derived through a complex series of algorithms that match qualification enrolments and completion across providers and across time. This identifier provides a link from pre-2003 data to the national student number (nsn) introduced in 2003. Together, these can be used to create an extended longitudinal data series for generating, for example, rates of qualification retention, completion and progression.
