The 2009 PISA Assessment

The development phase of PISA 2009 began in 2007. Additional reading questions are required for the main domain of each PISA cycle. Participating countries are encouraged to submit reading questions. This approach ensures that the questions asked in the PISA test reflect the diversity of cultural contexts and values.

New Zealand has developed reading questions and they have been sent to the PISA Consortium for review. Reading questions developed by international and other national reading experts are reviewed by the consortium’s Reading Expert Group and participating PISA countries on their suitability to go forward into the PISA Field Trial. The questions are assessed according to standardised criteria. New Zealand assessment experts have also been involved in reviewing the new reading items.

The PISA 2009 Field Trial is scheduled to be administered in schools during May and June 2008 and the Main Study during July and August 2009. Schools randomly selected to participate in the Field Trial will be advised of their selection in February 2008 and schools selected as participants for the Main Study will be advised in February 2009.
